About Scott
Born in the US Scott grew up in Switzerland, backpacked America’s wild west and hiked Nepal’s Himalayas before committing to a college life spent mostly in a darkroom. After several years as an assistant to a wide variety of NYC photographers, he struck out on his own, shooting sports figures and extreme activities. Initially focused on action and event coverage, McDermott’s work shifted toward the athletes themselves and their remarkable abilities, which led to photographing portraits of hundreds of the worlds best creative minds in Hollywood and the music industry. Along with his key photographic art exhibitions, Scott recently shot a series for “Mandela Day,” capturing the hands and faces of many of those who turned out to support Nelson Mandela’s message. Scott is based in New York City where he brings distinctive style to editorial work from “Men’s Health” to “Time” and advertising clients that include NBC, Dell, DirecTV, Simon & Schuster, Champion, HBO, Nike, Discovery Channel, Jet Blue, Time Warner, Ralph Lauren and Target. McDermott was recently named a winner in the 2009 Communication Arts Photo Annual and the 2010 PDN Photo Annual.

You pictures are beautiful, I have looked at them for the last several years. Did you spend any time in the United States when you were growing up?
