The new season of Whale Wars started last night and it looks like it’s going to be even more compelling than last season. They now have 3 boats but the Japanese are taking it up a notch too with more weaponry and more aggressive tactics. If you aren’t familiar with the show, it’s a documentary series about a group of volunteers on board the modified ship the Sea Shepherd that are engaged in a war to try and stop the Japanese whaling fleet in the waters off Antarctica. More info here: Whale Wars The show is on Fridays at 9pm on Animal Planet.
I had the privilege of photographing Cpt. Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd a couple years ago when he was promoting the film about his anti whaling efforts At the Edge of the World. At the time the film wasn’t released yet, the show didn’t exist yet and I didn’t realize who he was or what he had been up to. It was a fairly quick shoot, he was a nice guy and I just thought he was the captain of a ship that had something to do with the fight against whaling. Then when the TV show started I tuned in at first out of curiosity about what that guy I shot had been up to. But soon it turned into pure amazement of the courage and conviction of him and his crew. I am glad to have shook his hand, even if at the time I didn’t really know who he was.
