The Devil’s Double

I just saw the film The Devils’s Double and I have to say, Dominic Cooper’s performance is the best thing I’ve seen in a while. It’s based on the true story of Latif Yahia who was forcibly made to be Saddam Hussein’s eldest son, Uday’s body double. While certainly not lite entertainment, it’s quite the story and window into the world of the psychopathic Uday and Saddam Hussein’s regime. It’s being billed as another Scarface but I found it to be more like Last King of Scotland. Dominic Cooper plays both Latif and Uday at the same time and in 90% of the film they are in the same scenes together. It’s not an easy task to play opposite yourself. He is flawless at subtly letting the audience know which version we are looking at, Uday or the double although they always look the same. I hope The Academy takes notice when the time comes.

I photographed Dominic at Sundance where he was promoting the film and found him to be great fun. I had picked up the pistol glasses at a novelty store on Hollywood boulevard a few weeks before thinking they would be good for a shoot someday. Having misplaced my gold plated kalashnikovs, those glasses were really the prop of choice for this film and Dominic grabbed them immediately. Not until I saw the film yesterday however did I realize how great his performance is and how lucky I was to have those glasses on hand at the shoot. Elvis sideburn shades are always fun too…
