On most NY to LA flights, depending on weather the flight path will take you over the Grand Canyon. If you are sitting on the lucky side of the plane it’s pretty hard to miss. As is flying over Las Vegas at night. The flight usually goes right over Monument Valley too, but it’s a lot tougher to pick out. Since it’s one of my favorite places anywhere, I always look for it. On my flight to LA on Monday I managed to spot it and could even pick out the place where I shot the image on the left above a few years ago on my last trip there. I put it together with an iPhone pic I shot from the plane with the angle of view in white. The Navajo have built a great new hotel right next to the old visitor center and the shot above was taken a few hundred yards to the right of it. You can see the three main buttes, to the left of the red dot. Click the image to enlarge once and then again after the page loads to see it really big. It’s a very special place with a lot of history and well worth the drive if you’ve never been.
