A couple weeks ago in Toronto I had the pleasure of photographing Ben Affleck and Tony Mendez, the real life CIA agent at the center of the true story the new movie Argo is based on for Entertainment Weekly. The issue just came out today with a great interview with both Tony and Ben who stars in and directed the film. Although I haven’t seen it, by all accounts it’s great with a unique mix of drama and comedy and is already getting Oscar buzz. If you haven’t seen the trailer you can watch it here. It’s opening in theaters in the US on Oct 12th.
It’s not everyday that you get to talk to a real life CIA agent (knowingly anyway) and it was interesting to hear how this story was one of 50 such tales that were declassified in 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of the CIA. It started as a book Tony wrote which was then optioned several times for a film but never went anywhere until about 4 years ago when it made it’s way to Ben. You can’t help but wonder how many other great stories Tony has that we will never hear. I wish them all the best with the film and hope it wins them both a gold statue in March.
